Plastic surgery divides Oscars

Disputes about Botox and plastic surgery rage quietly behind the scenes at the Oscars as stars take their stands pro or con, both in words and in actions. Positions range from those of outspoken Botox opponent Meryl Streep to plastic surgery fan Melanie Griffith, 52, shown here. In a reader survey, Griffith was voted the celebrity at the Oscars who most obviously has visited a cosmetic doctor.
MORE THAN BEFORE. Actress Cameron Diaz, 37, said last year, "I'd love to be more voluptuous. It's just not my body type." This year she looked less pencil-thin than in the past.
DEBATE. Suppporting-actress nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal, 32, has been the subject of intense speculation about whether she recently had plastic surgery to her neck and around her eyes.
NOT 'NEVER.' Actress Sarah Jessica Parker, 44, is an outspoken opponent of Botox and plastic surgery, although she says, "I'd be a fool to say, 'Never!' because who knows how I'll feel about myself in four years?" She reportedly had a nose job early in her career, but shuns Botox. "I haven't had Botox or collagen or anything. I have lines," she says.
BOTOX OPPONENT. Comedian Tina Fey, 39, is no fan of Botox, but she's not averse to laser skin treatments. "I don't think Botox is for me. I think it is bad,“ she says.

STOP! Online celebrity watchers have repeated urged actress Molly Ringwald, 42, to stop using so much Botox and lip-plumping filler.
Tina Fey says people who use Botox injections to smooth away wrinkles 'look like their faces are full of candles - a shiny, shiny face. Festive. A holiday candle," she said. She has not had reconstructive plastic surgery to remove the small trademark scar she got in a childhood incident.
Despite her previous troubles with lipo, Kathy Griffin became a fan of plastic surgery again in the early 2000s. She had a nose job, brow lift, Botox injections, dental veneers, chemical hair straightening, a chemical peel, and more liposuction.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, shown here with fiance Peter Sarsgaard, has repeatedly visited a Beverly Hills medical office building in recent weeks, which fueled speculation about plastic surgery.
Meryl Streep says, "[Botox] limits you. If you do that, then you can't play so many different great parts, and also parts of your face don't move. For an actor, that's not the greatest thing. It's like an interruption in the energy."
SHE SAYS NO. Actress Demi Moore, 47, insists she hasn't had plastic surgery, even though few believe her.
Despite her wrinkled face, not everyone believes Helen Mirren when she says she has had no plastic surgery. Plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Huntington Beach believes she "has already had quite a bit of work done."

PLASTIC SURGERY FAN. Actress / comedian Kathy Griffin, 49, is an on-again, off-again fan of plastic surgery. She suffered serious side effects from liposuction in 1999. At the time, she criticized plastic surgery.
SOMETIMES. Actress Lauren Bacall, 85, says the popularity of plastic surgery is a "youth sickness," but she admits to having an occasional Botox injection. "The camera picks up everything, and you don't want to really look like a hag," she explains.
NOT FOR ME. Actress Kate Winslet, 34, says she rejects Botox because "I want to be able to really show the expressions on my face."
Penelope Cruz, shown here with supporting-actor Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, says she's looking forward to being a wrinkled 80-year-old: "When I'm 80, I want to look in the mirror and see an 80-year-old woman. My grandmothers had so many wrinkles, and every wrinkle told a story."

"She learned “how to achieve a more voluptuous figure without altering yourself surgically” while working on her “Miss Congeniality” films about beauty pageants, she says. “If you don't like your hips, go exercise.”
ZINGED. Sandra Bullock, 45, who won the Oscar for best actress, sometimes is criticized for what looks like excessive reliance on Botox injections.
The lips of Penelope Cruz sometimes suggest that she has used injections to augment them.
